Easily the most famous and perhaps the greatest “inspirational teacher” movie of all time, Dead Poets Society is a seminal piece of filmmaking that teenagers and young adults have strongly responded to for decades, and that those like myself in middle age still have great affection for. However, is 12-years-old too young to appreciate it?… Read More Film After 11 Podcast | Dead Poets Society (1989)
Does everything need to be a multiverse now, even James Bond? Given that the Bond movies are not strictly science fiction (a lot of crazy gadgets and the ending of Moonraker excepted, of course), I wouldn’t normally think of the franchise falling into the multiverse trope that has taken over so much of popular culture… Read More It’s Just a Number | No Time to Die (2021) 4K Ultra HD
I introduce my son Joseph to his first movie by the Master of Suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, with a viewing of the classic North by Northwest in this week’s Film After 11 podcast. One of my goals with this podcast is to instill my children with some appreciation for older movies they wouldn’t seek out on… Read More Film After 11 Podcast | North by Northwest (1959)
This week in the Film After 11 podcast, I take my son Joseph out to the ballpark for a viewing of Penny Marshall’s rousing 1992 baseball picture A League of Their Own. As a former Little Leaguer, he appreciated the depiction of baseball and the history lesson he didn’t know beforehand. If you’ll forgive the… Read More Film After 11 Podcast | A League of Their Own (1992)
In this week’s episode of the Film After 11 podcast (remember, we changed the title of the show), I take my son Thomas on a journey back to Medieval times for the rollicking adventure of A Knight’s Tale. As announced last week, the Film at 11 podcast has now officially been rebranded as Film After 11. It’s the same podcast as before, just with a slightly different title. For the inaugural episode, Joseph and I sit down to watch Robin Williams’ 1995 blockbuster Jumanji. If you’ve paid any attention, you may have noticed… Read More Film After 11 Podcast | Jumanji (1995)
With the huge success of Dances with Wolves and Unforgiven, Westerns made a big comeback on cinema screens in the early 1990s. Not all of them were awards bait, however. The likes of Tombstone or Young Guns II were just rowdy fun, while director Sam Raimi (creator of the Evil Dead franchise) dabbled with a… Read More Do We Have Any Real Gunmen in This Room? | The Quick and the Dead (1995) 4K Ultra HD
A movie that could only possibly have been created at the specific moment it was made, yet also simultaneously ahead of its time, Streets of Fire perplexed both critics and audiences during the summer of 1984, but has endured as a delightful cult property that, quite honestly, only gets better with age. I’ve watched the… Read More There’s Nothin’ Wrong with Goin’ Nowhere, Baby | Streets of Fire (1984) 4K Ultra HD
In the latest Film at 11 podcast, I take my son on a hunt for The Fugitive, the 1993 blockbuster thriller starring Harrison Ford as a wrongly convicted man on the run from the law. Joseph tells me he liked the movie a lot, even though he obviously had some problems following the plot. More… Read More Film at 11 Podcast: Episode 49 | The Fugitive (1993)
Remembered largely as one of the better Die Hard knockoffs that proliferated in the late 1980s and most of the following decade, the 1992 action thriller Under Siege makes almost no pretense of being anything other than what it is. The movie earned the nickname “Die Hard on a battleship” immediately upon release and wears… Read More This Is Not the Work of a Cook | Under Siege (1992) 4K Ultra HD
